https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1tj2zJ2Wvg Many things have been said about Welcome to the Jungle, (and of course if we were talking about the greatest rock riffs or intros there's no doubt that Sweet Child O' Mine would be here instead, further up the list) yet there's just something so venomous, dangerous and downright dirty about Jungle's intro riff that brings out the attitude of metal so perfectly, with a guitar tone that's just raw and disgusting as the urban jungle Axl is describing. Born in the space of three hours through a Jack Daniels-soaked impregnation, the song remains quintessential rock n' roll inhibited by the DIY aesthetic of punk, yet it's thanks to Slash's use of a vintage delay pedal twinned with amp settings and a certain custom Les Paul guitar that all combine to give the composition that extra-special, inimitable aura. It's definitely one of those genre-bending riffs that if you heaped an extra dollop of distortion on top would easily be a pioneering metal riff, rather than something that can hang with the bad-boys through attitude and spirit alone.
