https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yUZJZC2V40 How do you make a riff on just one open string? With pinch harmonics of course! Whilst legendary Viking warlord-channeling string-behemoth Zakk Wylde would take this idea of "Everything sounds better with squealed harmonics, right?!" to it's zenith when re-recording Iron Man with William Shatner in 2011 (it's just as crazy as it sounds), on last month's Catacombs of the Black Vatican he's returned to a more dynamic use of the now-signature technique, kicking out a fantastic addition to his overall discography. Back to Stillborn though, and a great song to feature both Wylde and career-launcher Ozzy Osbourne from back in 2003 when Zakk's vocals were resembling those of Ozzy's more than ever. Osbourne provides the icing on the metallic cake here, as the aforementioned riff is comprised of Zakk angling his pick towards that of what's needed to produce a pinch harmonic before simply moving up and down the open E string above the guitar's pickups. It's a pretty simple technique in hindsight, and definitely one of those cases where riff-writers across the world all collectively exclaimed "Why didn't we think of that?!" when the song naturally went supernova, becoming one of Black Label's most loved over the years.
