13. Mastodon - Crack The Skye (2009)

crack-the-skyeNotable Tracks: Quintessence, The Czar, Crack the Skye Mastodon is a percussion-heavy metal band that is no stranger to mainstream success and critical adoration; however, many people still have yet to embrace their musical mastery. Drummer Brann Dailor may very well be one of the top drummers of this past decade, and even if you can't seem to enjoy Mastodon as a band, Dailor's technical prowess should certainly impress even the most casual music listener. What sets this band apart from other heavy metal bands is their vocal approach and jazz-like drumbeats. When I first encountered Mastodon, I equated their sound to Black Sabbath, but with much higher BPM and a more noticeable use of the drums. If you want to listen to something groovy (for lack of a better term), this band will quench your musical thirst.

Hello there! I'm a graduate of FGCU (A.K.A. Dunk City!) I'm currently working on an M.A. in English Literature at Hofstra University. I'd like to eventually pursue either a M.S. in Business Administration or a Ph.D in Old English and Medieval Literature. I do thoroughly enjoy studying Old English for some mysterious reason. In my spare time, I try to keep up with well over a dozen television shows simultaneously, I frequent the local theaters, and I am an avid sports or FPS video gamer. Some of my favorite TV shows include: Dexter, The Office, X-Files, Homeland, and The Sopranos. Some of my favorite films include: The Usual Suspects, Donnie Darko, American Beauty, Fight Club, and Goodfellas.
