25 Best Damon Albarn Songs

5. The Universal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3moCIBOijo More commonly known as the British Gas song these days, 'The Universal' is perhaps the cat amongst the pigeons for Blur, as it looks towards the future with hope and optimism. And yeah, that was probably mocking when they wrote it, but don't tell me that the band are still being ironic by closing their shows with the words "It really, really could happen". It's another simple lyric, but it's one of Albarn's best; "When the days just seem to fall through you," he sings, "Just let them go." It's a message to just live in the present and enjoy what's around the corner. It's on an album with 'Country House', and sung in a grown-up croon. It's the literal corner that he's talking about, and the arrangement is one of the most stunning in Blur's back-catalogue. It's one of those songs, like 'Hoppipolla' or 'Don't Look Back In Anger', that you can feel yourself growing more sentimental with as the seconds unfold and it scales in that orchestral crescendo. A tender, lusciously produced and brilliantly written full stop to end a show with.
