25 Best Damon Albarn Songs

1. Beetlebum

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o21v35R_Og Phil Daniels prancing about London is an image forever associated with Britpop, and 2D and Murdoc running away from simian zombies is the picture that will forever sum up Gorillaz. Albarn bouncing off the ceiling in the 'Song 2' video is iconic in its own right, as is Milky, or even pictures of Albarn in Africa, China, or just sat at a piano. But the picture of Damon stood in the white jumper, red and blue rings around the arms, is the image that perhaps sums him up as a musician the best. 'Beetlebum' is the sound of a man that never needed anything to kick against in the first place. He just needed a melody like a country road, of melancholic left turns and sharply uplifting rights. He never needed to make sense with his lyrics, he could be as seductive as he liked, and still have the right to naively ask, "What you done?" And he knows exactly when to disappear into the background to let Graham take over. Music is subjective, but 'Beetlebum' is my number one because it's Damon all over, from the concept right through to the execution. It's an effortless, Beatlesy track, carried by the confidence of its melody and the smile of its frontman. It's the best song to ever hit number one. But what are your favourite Damon Albarn songs?
