25 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums Of The Last Decade
14. Jay Rock - Redemption
When you've got a stable that includes rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Reason and Isiah Rashad, it's understandable that it might be difficult to get a look-in. However, with Jay Rock's third album, Redemption, he forced fans and rappers alike to pay attention.
While his previous record, 90059, was good, it felt like Jay Rock really stepped it up a level on this album. Maybe it's because of the motorbike accident that nearly killed him that he speaks about on the first track on the album, "The Bloodiest," or because his labelmates were all creating the best work of their lives. Whatever it was that motivated him, it's helped Jay Rock make the type of record that will give him the credit he truly deserves.
For a rapper who made his name telling street stories, Jay Rock really increased his range as an artist on this album. Of course, we still get those street stories that we love him for, but we also get a deeper, more personal look at him as an individual. It makes for a far more interesting album than many imagined and has plenty of replay value too.
