25 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums Of The Last Decade
5. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN
It's another entry for the Compton rapper, but when you've got a discography as good as his are you even surprised? We're not completely sure why Lamar called his album DAMN, but it's apt considering it's the same response many fans had when they heard it.
Although his first two albums were wildly popular, they weren't necessarily the most fan-friendly records ever released. They were complex, dark and challenging records for the listener. DAMN, however, manages to add the fun element into the mix that wasn't there before, making it essential for all hip-hop fans.
He gives us a little bit of everything on this album. Anthems like "Humble," "DNA" and "Loyalty" are the sort of hits that mainstream audiences fall in love with due to the catchiness and general vibe of the songs. However, he balances things out with more introspective tracks like "Feel," "Fear" and album standout, "Duckworth."
While it isn't as raw as Good Kid, M.A.A.D City or To Pimp A Butterfly, DAMN is willing to sacrifice some of the qualities that make those albums so great, to make a more cohesive, all-round record. DAMN shows the growth in Lamar as not only a rapper, but a songwriter in general.
