25 Greatest Muse Songs Of All Time

3. Citizen Erased

http://youtu.be/HiHUKVoYbdc The centrepiece of 'Origin Of Symmetry', this seven-minute epic has absolutely everything you could possibly want from a Muse song - wailing vocals, mammoth riffs, multiple tempos and structures, and of course, Matt at his piano. The opening two minutes finds the band itchy and wanting to pour their souls out for us all to see, before the next two sees a drop to a more relaxed tempo as the instruments are treated with a tad more respect - but the eye of the storm eventually comes full circle and we're dropped right back in it, with the guitars twice as ferocious and the drums unforgiving. Again, the tempo drops, this time even further, and the band settles into a lovely languid groove, driven by Matt's beautiful piano and a wonderful dreamy reverb. Eventually, the mist clears and Matt gives possibly his most beautiful vocal performance. It has to be heard to be truly appreciated.

2. New Born

http://youtu.be/jZjxskTrSz0 When this dropped as a single back in 2001, it was clear that we were in for something special from 'Origin Of Symmetry', as if we hadn't been treated enough already. The opening minute or so is Matt at his piano, crooning away, before he suddenly pauses, as if for dramatic affect, as the piano echo rushes back in and he rips his guitar open with such gusto as to blow your speakers. And that's before the rest of the band join in. The aggression barely drops for the second verse, before building to a thundering chorus, where you can barely believe the band is merely a three-piece. Afterwards we have a wonderful guitar solo as Matt again treats his guitar like the most exotic of instruments. As the song crashes to a halt, bringing the clanging opening riff back around the block a few times, you realise that this band has made a mark that no amount of mediocre albums can undo, and no other band has done since.
