25 Greatest Muse Songs Of All Time

1. Stockholm Syndrome

http://youtu.be/gXN9acC9edU Muse's post-'Origin' future was guaranteed success. They could only go one way, by upping the ante even further. 'Stockholm Syndrome' did just that, and blew down the door with somehow greater subtlty and power simultaneously. I can't go without the song's incendiary opening riff, coupled with it's mighty bass throughout the twisting and turning verses. 'Opera' is the only way to describe how we crash into such a pounding scream-accompanied riff before the chorus hits. The sheer addictive drama of this song was evidence of new found restraint and variety - rarely can a song's chorus have been so heavy, yet so slow, with restrained piano somehow finding its way into the mix. The song's intro riff makes a reprisal for the middle eight, and is then bent thrillingly out of shape as Matt finds new ways to astound the listener while you try to come to terms with what's come before. The final triumphant chorus leaves you with a bitter parting shot of 'I wish I could!" before bludgeoning you over the head with another blistering riff to bring things to a breathless close. It's incredibly hard to put into words how powerful 'Stockholm Syndrome' is and this should not be listened to through your laptop speakers. Decent headphones, or a decent speaker system are required, and I could say that about most Muse songs, but this is the most perfect example of Muse's power and beauty, all jammed into the same song with no chinks in the armour. Roll on album number seven.
