30 Grime Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

17. Nguzunguzu - Skycell

Fellow members of Future Brown alongside Fatima Al Qadiri, Nguzunguzu have shown better than arguably any other producers that grime can be successfully and excitingly fused with sounds from elsewhere into something truly futuristic sounding. The Fade To Mind production duo, comprised of world-class DJs Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda, are inspired by the ease of access to musical material that the internet promotes. As they themselves have stated, "The way you can blend [...] totally different genres and make something new very inspiring to how we create". This magpie-like approach to referencing and influence has allowed the duo to push grime (certainly the dominant influence on Skycell, their strongest release to date) into new territories, granting potential extra longevity to the genre. If the likes of Mr. Mitch, Logos and Faze Miyaki are reinventing grime from within, enhancing certain qualities of its textures in favour of others, Nguzunguzu and fellow outsiders are taking it apart from a distance, combing aspects of its sounds with those of other cultures to create something novel and weird.
