30 Grime Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

8. Visionist - I'm Fine/I'm Fine Part II

Visionist is the highest placed of the new breed of producers on this list, and with good reason: he is effectively doing things with grime that completely reshape and distort the genre in more beautiful and unusual ways than pretty much any producer has since Wiley's early days. Although there are many examples of Visionist's sound, his most notable statements to date are the pair of EPs that Lit City Trax put out in 2013 and 2014. The tracks are skeletal and ethereal compositions made from manipulated R&B vocal samples. These vocal notes are distorted and arranged into a grime-like structure. Effectively, Visionist succeeds in retaining the cold textures of grime while fusing them with a gorgeous emotionality borne from beautiful choral sounds. His tracks take the sensual style of R&> and crank it up with the powerful voices, making the listener feel like they are walking through a cathedral of grime. He is due to release an album this year, and to say that it is hotly anticipated would be an understatement. Highly recommended.
