30 Grime Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

7. K9 - Mad In The Cut

K9 is evidence of grime's promotion of a never-say-die attitude. Despite being largely overlooked in the earlier parts of his career before spending time in prison, the MC re-emerged in 2014 with one of the most stunningly original grime mixtapes in years. Mad In The Cut is dark, dense and features truly bizarre (but brilliant) production from the likes of Visionist, MSSINGNO, Plata and Dark0. K9's growling voice is reminiscent of a UK-inflicted Kendrick Lamar, but rougher and more edgy. K9 is just as home snarling over gnarlier tunes as he is exploring his personal life and losses over delicate textures. This is a great contemporary release and - best of all - it's free to download.
