1. Why It's Better Than The Wall
The Wall: One of the single most successful albums of all time, The Wall is best remembered for having a clear, yet complex concept. It follows the life of a young boy named Pink Floyd who slowly blocks himself off from the outside world. Not physically, but rather emotionally, with each bad experience in his life leading to another brick in his wall of isolation from society.
Why Animals Is Better: Rather than being loosely inspired by bassist Roger Waters' own experiences, Animals has a concept adapted from George Orwell's brilliant novella Animal Farm. While the novel was a criticism of Stalinism, Pink Floyd (or more accurately, Roger Waters himself) made the version on their album focus on capitalism, and it divides most people into three classes - Dogs (violent and antagonistic), Pigs (leaders who trample on others for their own good), and Sheep (mindless and submissive). Animals has the advantage in that, rather than being a story like The Wall, it simply conveys an idea, a message, and does it much more simply and with much more confidence.
Before commenting, please keep in mind this article is not intended to show disrespect to Pink Floyd or any of their albums. I love and own every album mentioned here.
