1. Kim Deal

The single most important and amazing female bass player of all time, Kim Deal has influenced everyone from Nirvana to Modest Mouse. She was a huge part of the Pixies sound and the main component of the well known "loud/quiet/loud" technique they often adopted. Deal brought a lot to the band and to alternative music. Her power stage presence was extremely refreshing. Between her witty banter and her explosive smile, she captivated audiences everywhere. Her fantastic harmonizing was the perfect backup, the yin to Charles' screaming yang. But the most important part of her contribution was her bass playing. Her bass playing was fantastic. Nothing flashy, just good, solid rhythm. She led the charge for most songs, creating a deep enough groove that allowed Charles to sometimes stop playing altogether during verses, and allowed lead guitarist Joey Santiago to paint over her rhythms with his noisy punk guitar attacks. A trailblazer, and powerful feminist, Deal will always be remembered for her work with Pixies and will ultimately go down as one of the most important female musicians ever. Her influence is everywhere and alternative rock, as we know it now, owes her a great debt. Key Tracks: 1. Hey 2. Gigantic 3. Debaser
