5 Metal Albums We Should Still Crank (And 5 We Should Tank)

8. Tank It! Pantera - Metal Magic

Metal? Maybe. Magic? If so, the magic ran out so long ago, Harry Potter couldn't bring it back with CPR.

Sorry to do this to Pantera right after the glowing review of Vulgar Display of Power, but to truly appreciate the phenomenon they became, we must examine why they decided to make the change.

If you are a casually familiar fan, you may believe Pantera began at Cowboys From Hell. Do strap in, dear friend and experience Pantera v 1.0...The Power Metal years.

Back in 1983, Pantera's debut album, Metal Magic, was released to little acclaim. The Abbott brothers were still teenagers and glam metal was still in its hair-sprayed glory. Vocals in those days were handled by Terry Glaze. Glaze sang on the three first Pantera albums before Phil Anselmo took over on their fourth release, Cowboys From Hell.

Make no mistake, "Glam-tera" had a decent fan base and Metal Magic wasn't terribly out of place for its time. Seeing and hearing the serious, aggressive band they were to become, these early records now feel like the work of young KISS fans who were still finding themselves. The gild is well off of this cheese-tastic lily. Tank it.
