5 Metal Albums We Should Still Crank (And 5 We Should Tank)
5. Crank It! Type O Negative - October Rust
October Rust is the musical equivalent of finding your favorite old sweater in the back of the closet. It still looks, feels and smells like it did in 1996.
Type O Negative were odd ducks among their contemporaries. They could be very dark and cynical, even crude. Other times Peter Steele and co. brought a vulnerability and touch of satire to their doom and gloom. October Rust is the album a metal band makes when they don't care what their friends will say.
Although programmed drums were used on the album, October Rust marks the first appearance of Johnny Kelly in the credits. There was significant pressure on the band to follow up their platinum-selling album Bloody Kisses.
The band intentionally created the most accessible album in their catalogue. Drenched in sludgy guitar, melodic keyboards and sexual innuendo, October Rust is one of those albums that makes one feel a certain way while listening, even if it can't really be explained.
Keyboardist Josh Silver said of the record, "October Rust is the easiest listen. It was odd, it was weird — and very sexual. It worked." Agreed. Crank it!!!
