2. The Staves - Dead & Born & Grown (technicality - American pressing is 2013)
Heavenly. That's one word to sum up the three sisters from England, which have released their debut album to nearly little acclaim. Beautiful harmonies are splattered throughout this ethereal experience. While it's easy to fall into the content, it's beyond difficult to ever let go of The Staves' music. Starting with "Wisely & Slow," you get a perfect vision of the band's scope - three-person harmonies, light instrumentation, smooth production, and excellent songwriting. Every song is right on the mark, hitting you in the heart with choruses and unforgettable melodies. Their folk sound seems to be right at home, no matter where you live. There's a scary amount of comfort in the music, and there's a feeling of reaching out and relating all over the album. "Pay Us No Mind" is floaty and percussive and gives off a "cloud-nine" feel. The title track is a sure standout on the album, particularly in the brilliant vocal performance.
