2. The Songs
The Spice Girls wrote and released their first single "Wannabe" in 1996 and on first listen it had one hit wonder spewed all over it. Impressively, they amassed numerous global number one's and sold a total of 75 million records. The Saturdays have had 3 silver singles and one platinum album but their last album in the UK failed to crack the top 20. The Spice Girls were at their peak together for 5 years, but the bulk of their most rememberable and nostalgic songs were released between 1996 and 1998. Tunes in those three years made up the majority of their Greatest Hit album, which highlight just how Spice Manic everyone had gone. The Saturdays have been plodding along since 2008 and while there are some modern pop masterpieces like "Higher", "Ego" and their cover of "Just Can't Get Enough", nothing has stood out as an international smash it like "Wannabe" or "Stop". Newer tracks like "30 Days" and "What About Us" are strictly dance floor fillers, but aren't stand out delights. Even traditionally RnB artists like Rihanna and Kelly Rowland have explored the dance music scene, but in 2013 pop music is the big seller - just look at Carly Rae Jepsen! Every song that the Spice Girls have released as a single, has been a smash hit. Albums are often laced with filler tracks and some singles the Saturdays have released would have been left off the record if they were given to other acts. There is nothing spectacular about any of The Saturday's tracks, overproduced vocals and electronically created beats leave them feeling a bit like a cookie cutter track. By that I mean, it wouldn't matter who performed the song, because it is so generic and manufactured. If I was a betting man, Little Mix will have a far better reception in the US than the Saturdays, kind of like the way One Direction are far huger the Wanted.
