5 Reasons Why The Saturdays Are NOT The New Spice Girls

1. The Career & Competition

thesaturdays1 The Saturdays in the UK never looked like they would take off overseas. They broke through as the support act for the most successful girl band of the 21st century in the UK, Girls Aloud. Even from their tender beginnings, they came across as second best. Joining up with the E! network meant The Saturdays joined the Kardashians in television primetime. It is difficult to take an act seriously a genuine candidate for global superstardom, when their career starter has a Kourtney and Kim Takes Miami lead in. They have already been forced to defend their integrity in the eyes of American media, but I think they should be worrying more about another little band, more specifically, Little Mix. When Jesy, Leigh-Anne, Jade and Perrie begin their press tour of the US to promote their own Stateside domination bid, The Saturdays will face stiff competition. Little Mix have the X Factor machine behind them and references to One Direction will be a huge help. They will automatically give them a leg up, because Simon's influence over in America will guarantee Little Mix high profile appearances and millions of dollars in promotion. Like the Spice Girls, Little Mix have already 'branded' themselves with unique looks that set them apart from the competition. The Saturdays' best chance of international success is to release some killer dance tracks and totally tailor themselves for that market. They will be able to carve out their own story, but the shoes the Spice Girls left to fill are too large and the Saturdays aren't up for walking in them.
