2. Silverchair - 'Freak'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niVzMcA3FNM This is an absolute belter of a tune. Silverchair, were a mere 15 years old when they first appeared on the music scene, getting attention outside of their native Australia, almost instantly. Clearly having an obsession with Nirvana and Alt Rock/Metal in general, first album, 'Frogstomp' was certainly impressive for such young pups, but it was on sophomore release, 'Freakshow' that they really came into their own. More focussed, whilst also managing to widen their pallet at the same time, but still very much rooted in the post grunge style that had been heard on the debut. Guitarist/vocalist and pretty boy, Daniel Johns, was perhaps following the theme of the songs title, and trying to be as weird and haphazard as possible, and he really did pass the test. The songs first verse really has to be up there with the most bizarre words ever committed to tape. "No more maybes Your baby's got rabies Sitting on a ball In the middle of the Andes" Drugs! It has to be drugs. Those strange images aside, the riff that drives this particular number along, is infectious, and when the drums and bass guitar join in and lock it down, it creates a fantastic groove and is heavier than a planet. The chorus is also superb, and you won't mind it pinging around your head for hours.
