5 Terrible Lyrics In Otherwise Awesome Songs

1. Deep Purple - 'Highway Star'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh0iihjANPc Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a massive Deep Purple fan, but some of the words in this beast , are a bit lame. The English group's sixth album, 'Machine Head', is must have for every self respecting Rock and Metal fan and it all kicks off with the thundering, adrenaline rush of 'Highway Star'. Not many albums boast a better opener than right here. In 1972, the band were already a major player in the music world, but when this came out, their legendary status was sealed. The second album from the revered, MKII line up, featuring the silver throated, Ian Gillan on vocals, is cited as one of the reasons Heavy Metal was born. Featuring seminal cuts like 'Smoke On the Water', 'Maybe I'm A Leo', 'Space Truckin' and the aforementioned, first track, the band knew they had something rather special on their hands as all the stars aligned. It is a clever idea to use the imagery of a girl and a car, all the while using ambiguous phrases that are synonymous with both. The delivery in places though is a little suspect, as is the case with the first verse, where Gillan does the unforgivable, and rhymes a word with the very same word. "Nobody gonna take my car I'm gonna race it to the ground Nobody gonna beat my car It's gonna break the speed of sound Oooh it's a killing machine It's got everything Like a driving power big fat tyres And everything" Oh, dear. Not so good is it? In an interview regarding the making of 'Machine Head', Gillan does admit that he was often more interested in making sure that the words were phonetically pleasing, rather than particularly poetic or profound. Most admirable to be honest as he was also capable of some gorgeous words in his time ('When A Blind Man Cries'). It was a balls out, rocking, album intro that was meant to hook you in and get you ready for a career defining record. It delivered on that front. If you have some examples of great songs with a dodgy lyric or two, then feel free to share in the comments!

Live and work in Aberdeen, Scotland...unfortunately. Sang in My Minds Weapon (Basick/Drakkar/Sony) for ten years (2002 - 2012) and now just tinkering with various other projects. Die hard Leeds United fan. Metalhead in my heart but also love many other genres of music. Also enjoy anything with Christopher Walken or David Caruso. Family live in Perth, Australia, so have been there many times. Best place in the world.
