BUT the film is also a redemption story, following the group's progress back to full power, as they recruit an earth-stomping new bassist in Robert Trujillo and embark on the next chapter of their career, stronger than before. It is no surprise that the fundamentally flawed St. Anger was a product of this process, but it is all part of the process of the band's redefinition, and ultimately led to much better work and a stronger unit further down the line.
On top of this, Some Kind Of Monster was a huge critical success, drawing the kind of positive response (from fans and critics alike) the band would surely have killed for with its accompanying album, St Anger. Entertainment Weekly called it "one of the most revelatory rock portraits ever made." It's hard to argue with that appraisal, even 16 years later.
