5 Times Metallica Were The Best Band In The World (& 5 Times They Were The Worst)
2. WORST: Some Kind Of Monster
The infamous Metallica documentary was released in 2004 and bared all in an often painful and far from flattering light, charting the band's late-'90s/early-'00s implosion. Regardless of whether the content is easy to watch, the film is compelling viewing and a true insight into the band.
Jason quits, Metallica sue Napster, and the recording of a new album is put on hold as Hetfield's drug and alcohol addiction spirals out of control. Following an aggressive confrontation with Lars, the frontman has to enter rehab to face his demons, leaving the rest of the band unsure of whether Metallica has any future at all.
The James/Lars drama spills over into the former's return and, alongside Lars' constant whining, gives the documentary a catty, reality TV feel at times, only a studio audience away from an episode of Jeremy Kyle.
