27. Cavalera Conspiracy – Psychosis

For nearly thirty years, the brothers Cavalera have been at the forefront of South American metal. Whether it’s with their pioneering days as the driving force of the Brazilian powerhouse Sepultura or as reunited veterans in Cavalera Conspiracy and their Return to Roots tour, Max and Iggor are undeniably two kings of extreme music.

And after more than twelve months out on the road destroying stages worldwide with Return to Roots, the siblings have returned to the studio and re-cemented their status as metal royalty with Psychosis, Cavalera Conspiracy’s fourth full-length disc.

Packed to the brim with incendiary thrash/groove metal goodness, Psychosis is a true belter of a disc, its breakneck speed, vitriolic yells and emphatic percussion a giant callback to Sepultura’s halcyon Arise (1991) days. Its guitars are to die for, roaring to life with the sheer brutality of “Insane” and then refusing to ease up until the conclusion of the aptly named “Excruciating”.

Iggor especially knocks it out of the park in his performance, his primal and tribal use of the drums blending with his innate speed to craft a perfectly primal framework that the rest of the record is expertly built around. Truly, it is a sublime mix of pummelling in its quickness, but also powerful enough to evoke enormous headbanging with ease.

Top it all off with Max’s sheer loudness on the mic and Psychosis becomes nothing short of sheer, rowdy glory and a deeply enjoyable throwback to the Cavaleras’ prime.
