50 Definitive Beastie Boys Songs

32. Shake Your Rump

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BptQHAW2T5M If this song doesn't want to make you move, you need to get your head checked (pun intended). Off of the groundbreaking LP Paul's Boutique, "Shake Your Rump" is a frantic disco-stomper crammed with references from Patty Duke, to Fred Flintstone. Featuring an amazing instrumental by Matt Dike formerly of the Dust Brothers, the track has layers and layers of sounds that need to be closely listened to in order to be truly appreciated. Then there's the bass, oh man that bass... Stand out line: "Well I'm Mike D and I'm back from the dead/Chillin' at the beach, down at Club Med"

31. Heart Attack Man

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5JZ0rOX8AM This list wouldn't be complete without one more hardcore punk song. Obviously influenced by such legends as Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat, "Heart Attack Man" transcends what could have been a generic punk song thanks to its humorous lyrics. Stand out line: "Heart Attack, Heart Attack Man/Spend all your money on your health insurance plan"

30. An Open Letter to NYC

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LItOrlOi9SA While their New York pride is apparent in much of their discography, this ode to their home is their most somber and emotional. The track features the Beasties talking about post 9/11 New York City and how it is "two towers down but still in the game". To the 5 Boroughs is their most political and serious LP, and this song is its anchor. The song is even more remarkable when you find out that most of it samples a Dead Boys song. Stand out line: "Dear New York I hope you're doing well, I know a lot's happen and you've been through hell/So, we give thanks for providing a home, through your gates at Ellis Island we passed in droves"
