50 Worst Number Ones Of All Time

15. Tulisa: Young (2012)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP_eI5T_deU When everyone heard Tulisa was going solo, people were sceptical. And rightfully so. €˜Young€™ had the formula of an instant chart hit, but the execution left a lot to be desired. Tulisa was never the strongest vocalist, something she could cover up as part of N-Dubz. But by coming to the fore, it€™s clear she€™s not quite cut out for the solo business. She sounds incredibly strained, signalling that she hasn€™t quite found her comfort zone. The lack of a strong chorus reinforces this, as Tulisa bizarrely allows the subpar production to take centre stage. The two do not work well together, and rather comes off as a cheap David Guetta reject.

14. Alexandra Burke: Start Without You (2010)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWKchS0GAyo The song that signalled the end of Alexandra Burke€™s career. Yes I€™m being overdramatic, but this song is disgraceful. The intro is beyond ridiculous, the beat is marmite, the verses are pathetic and the chorus is lame. Lazy Morgan tips it over the edge and off the cliff into the sea where we hopefully never hear of it again. But seriously now, it€™s all over the place. This dire hit oozes a severe lack of effort and energy. €˜Bad Boys€™ established Burke some credibility as an artist, but this song shattered that, and she has failed to recapture it ever since. And don€™t even get me started on that shambles of a music video.

13. DJ –tzi: Hey Baby (2001)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNsmiqmaEWo Irritating. Irritatingly catchy. Yet somehow, that translated into a bonafide hit, despite the lack of singing ability on display. The verses are so painfully weak; you can tell the creative team struggled to work the song around the chorus, which is the only saving grace of the song. I mean seriously, you would have thought they could stretch the budget and find someone to sing the verses, or at least someone who wouldn€™t stumble through them and lose all sense of their self respect. Apparently he€™s still making music today... lucky for us he hasn€™t had any more crossover hits.

12. Geri Halliwell: Mi Chico Latino (1999)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgoKfHg1JsU A very sexy song. A very sexy song indeed. Arguably Halliwell€™s most successful post-Spice Girls release, €˜Mi Chico Latino€™ was admittedly quite catchy. But in hindsight, it wasn€™t great. The lyrics leave a lot to be desired, and Halliwell€™s delivery is quite lazy. I could put in a more energetic performance, and probably have at some point in my life. As a standalone track, it€™s average at best. If performed by someone other than Halliwell, I doubt it would have experienced the same high levels of success. But she was riding a wave of Spice Girls momentum, so it was only inevitable that she€™d hit number one. Unfortunately, she didn€™t choose a very credible song.

11. Crazy Frog: Axel F (2005)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k85mRPqvMbE Oh the viral sensation that was Crazy Frog. This song was obscenely popular when first released, largely due to a ringtone campaign. Kids would be playing it all day, every day. It garnered a notorious reputation for being one of the most annoying, yet also one of the catchiest songs at the time. Nowadays, the fad of Crazy Frog seems to have died down, but this song will never be forgotten. They tried to replicate the success with other remixes, including one of Queen€™s €˜We Are The Champions€™, which I did actually own at one point. But none were ever as popular, or as annoying.
