5. Michael Jackson Come Together
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubR9cXWkXv8 Considered by many to be their greatest album, Abbey Road opens with a strong groovy tune in John Lennon's Come Together. This song is very typical of John Lennon featuring a catchy chorus, seemingly nonsensical lyrics and of course that distinctly raspy voice that only John could have produced. Yet, as distinctly John Lennon as this song is, multiple covers have shown that, in a musical sense, this song actually lends itself to a wide interpretation. The most well-known is probably Aerosmith's hard rock cover of the song and while it certainly is a decent enough effort to warrant a place on this list, I instead opted for Michael Jackson's powerful and funky rendition. Jacksons cover of the song transforms it from its original groovy 60s vibe to a more 80s funk/pop sound which, generally speaking is usually a bad thing. Nevertheless, it all seems to work. Even such things as having the bassist slap that distinctive line adds to a thoroughly enjoyably cover. His performance of the song live on his 1988 film, Moonwalker perfectly exemplifies the funky and energetic vibe he brings to an already groovy tune. He performs the song in typical Michael Jackson style and on paper it really shouldnt work, but in practice? Thats a different story.
