3. Clever Lyrics
Every song of Gaga's includes controversial lyrics exploring themes such as love, sex, religion, identity, freedom and individualism. The song which represents these the most is "Born This Way". The lyrics to this single are clever and the chorus helps to reach out to all those who feel excluded; "I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Don't hide yourself in regret Just love yourself and you're set I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way, born this way" The song "Applause" contains the line "Pop culture was in art, now art's in pop culture in me". This goes to show how aware Gaga is of the impact she is having on both the pop world and the art world. In "Applause" she deliberately makes a link between herself and a pop icon from a previous decade, Marc Bolan, when she quotes the T-Rex hit "Bang A Gong" in the opening line. Gaga has used her iconic cult status to good effect from the very beginning. The single "Paparazzi" shows that the artist is conscious of how important she is to the media and how much the media relies on her to sell stories.
