6. Sleep
stoner rock/doom metal For those of you who are loyal fans of mine, who rush to read any new material I put up the moment its published (yes, I am that deluded, please dont take it away from me, I dont know what Id do without it), you may recall my gushing review of
Sleeps performance at
Ill Be Your Mirror, due in part to the fact Ive been a fanboy for just shy of a decade now and I was really stoned. Oh, and it was one of the best sets I have ever seen. Like
Codeine, theyre another band who are pretty long in the tooth, having started in 1990 and remained active for most of the 90s, they came to split after disputes with their label over their album
Dopesmoker. Having been signed to a major after their brilliant
Holy Mountain, the label werent happy when the band spent all their money on weed and amplifiers before delivering a single 63 minute long song as their debut album on the label. Considered unmarketable. All members went onto pastures new in the shape of
High on Fire and
Om, with notable critical acclaim in their chosen fields. However 2009 saw them persuaded to regroup and come out of hibernation as
Sleep for
All Tomorrows Parties. Since then theyve been playing very sporadic sets here and there, but this year has seen them make a more solidified return to the touring circuit and always see the long awaited re-mastered version of the unmarketable classic that is
Dopesmoker. http://youtu.be/_dZFH2M_9VY
