4. Florence + The Machine
Feisty red-haired vocalist Florence Welch came to prominence with her band Florence + the Machine and their debut album Lungs. Certainly one of the most unique acts to hit the airwaves, Florence + the Machine have had hit after hit with tracks such as Dog Days are Over, Cosmic Love, and Drumming Song. Welch's vocals have been praised falling somewhere between a powerhouse and impeccable restraint. The unique combination of instrumentation such as drums and harp offer a feel that most other songs on the radio can't match. In 2011 Florence + the Machine were nominated for best new artist at the Grammys and have gathered a large amount of other nominations and wins at many other awards ceremonies. Later that year they released their follow-up album Ceremonials to much positive critical reception. The album and its first single Shake It Up have also gathered a great deal of nominations. What makes Florence + the Machine so amazing is the amalgamation of alternative rock, upbeat pop, and classical influence. Couple this with the emotion in both Florence's lyrics and vocals and you're listening to something truly astounding. There are really no better examples of this than Cosmic Love, Rabbit Heart, and Howl from the album Lungs. Each expresses a deep longing that is present within Welch's voice highlighted by the mystical arrangement of instruments. Whether you get your music from the mainstream or fall more into the indie scene Florence + the Machine have something for you.
