3. Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York

Eminem Stan
Pogue Mahone

It's a real shame that Fairytale Of New York is a Christmas song, because it's one of those you could gladly listen to all year round. And I do, much to the chagrin of pretty much everybody. But why? It's absolutely bad-ass.

It's not exactly your typical Festive fair; rather than the usual carol bells, religious overtones, and generally heartwarming themes, Fairytale of New York is an Irish ballad documenting the Christmas breakup of a couple, the lyrics being described by the late Kirsty MacCool as "bittersweet, often just bitter".

It's a foot-tapping tune which characterises the true essence of Christmas: conflict, stress, and ultimately, tired resolution. Let's have a sherry, and do this all again next year.
