7 Classic Songs Whose Verses Outshine Their Choruses

4. Where Is My Mind? €“ Pixies

One of the most chilling and memorable riffs Pixies ever concocted, this ghost train of a tune drifts along but grinds to a halt every time the chorus stumbles in its way. It brings nothing to the song €“ the master volume on the instruments is shoved right down to accentuate Black Francis€™ warbling of the title, so it€™s extremely basic and a little jarring, aurally. A great track all the same, but missing a solid chorus line to string it all together.

3. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys

Whatever you think of surf rock€™s founding fathers, there are some inarguably fine hits in their extensive back catalogue of whimsical psychedelic pop; €˜Good Vibrations€™ is perhaps their most famous. While it might be the chorus that€™s considered the recognisable part, the song is far more impressive than this relatively unremarkable refrain might give it credit for. The depth of the slowly unfurling first and second verse is boundless €“ the unnerving vocals and colourful but downplayed instrumentation leave us feeling lost on the lacklustre crescendo. And sadly the verses don€™t stick around for too long either, so we€™re left with a chorus/middle-eight-heavy song which just isn€™t as captivating as it should be.
