7 Heavy Metal Songs About Space Travel

4. Bruce Dickinson - Space Race

Space In Your Face
DARIO LOPEZ-MILLS

Though he didn’t have a hand in the previous entry, Bruce Dickinson has sought stellar inspiration in his music before. Space Race from his release with Skunkworks also focuses on the finality of a life but not in the prevalent “lost in space forever” way.

Dickinson is more vague in his motives, seemingly fed up with the state of things on Earth (“I don’t belong to nation, state or dying race. I leave my prejudice, my religion is in space.”) and expressing discontent about the potential and apparent rush to expand out into the stars (“Why are we running in this space race? Why are we acting like we own the place?”).

While Dickinson does express that there will once again be unity among those in this alleged space race (“Unity is coming, singular again”), this song seems to indicate that the end of the race is the sun (“Nothing left but burning up into the sun on a cosmic beach, I’ll see you there”), essentially saying we’re collectively in a race to our deaths but seemingly expresses that one should appreciate the ride (“Just want to feel the starlight on my face and reach out my hand and touch beyond.”)
