When it comes to totally weird albums, things really don't get much stranger than Captain Beefheart's 1969 release Trout Mask Replica. The album combines elements of blues, avant-garde, free jazz and various other genres, creating a huge mesh of seemingly discordant sounds and tones. Upon a person's first listen they're likely to be totally bewildered, and assume that the record is a bunch of improvised tracks laid on top of each other. Yet the record's masterful production gives the whole thing an impressive sound, even if the instrumentation and vocals might sound off. There is something persistently €œwrong€ with Trout Mask Replica, as if the vocals have no relationship with the music that's being played. Yet the album is commonly regarded as Beefheart's masterpiece, and is considered one of the most influential rock albums eve recorded. According to many of the record's fans it requires multiple listens before the whole thing €œclicks€ and becomes genius, but it's that first listen that remains truly unforgettable.
