8 Demo Versions Of Famous Songs You'll Barely Recognise

4. Coldplay €“ Lovers In Japan

Written and recorded for Coldplay's 2008 album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, Lovers In Japan is a song that's propped up at the beginning my jaunty piano but is soon encompassed by a whole host of other instrumentation, including ethereal guitar and banging drums. It's a song where Chris Martin's vocal prowess really shines.

An early demo version of the song, then, strips away all of the musical finery leaving nothing but the piano and a Chris Martin who is very much still attempting to work out the song's vocal fineries. He even stops in the middle to tackle a particularly challenging vocal key. It's an interesting insight into the process of song-making and its made all the more endearing by Martin's humorous final comment: €œHmm...that needs a bit of work.€ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZKUv7Ew_94
