8 Great Albums That Are Incredibly Top Heavy With Their Best Songs
7. The Killers - Hot Fuss
The Killers debut which combined New Wave sound with punk rock was a big deal when it arrives back in 2004, and landed them on more than a few albums of the year/decade lists.
The first half of the album is a who's who of legendary anthems that have been memed to death. 'Mr Brightside' is often hailed as the national song of white people, causing any club to erupt into unison at its insanely catchy chorus and unstoppable charm.
'Somebody Told Me' is a brilliantly written, fast-paced and constantly changing breakup song that will remain embedded in your head for weeks. 'Smile Like You Mean It' and 'All These Things That I've Done' are two mid-tempo ballads with crowd-pleasing choruses that also hit all the right notes to the round off one hell of an opening rollout of songs.
Then you get to the second half of the album where every other song seems relegated to being the tracks that don't have a Wikipedia page. They are serviceable, but the passion and gusto that the first 5 in the album had seems lacking and you'd be forgiven for never playing past track 5.
'Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll' is the closest to capturing the magic of the opening set, but aside from the titular lines in the chorus being belted out, there's nothing particularly bold or memorable to find.
An album that was so close to greatness, if it only kept the quality consistent throughout.
