Although their album cover makes them look like a Mumford and Sons cover band, Shame have created the sort of album in Songs of Praise that Marcus Mumford and co. wouldn't have the balls to make. It's gritty, it's fun and it's also very smart. All the sort of things you want from your debut album in hopes of making an impact.
There are a lot of old British punk elements to it that resemble groups like The Clash and The Jam, especially the clever and sarcastic lyrics that make the listener very aware that this album is that it's not going to be an easy ride for anyone listening.
Clanging guitars that feel like an ode to bands from the past, mixed with lead singer, Charlie Steen, raspy voice and poignant lyrics create a familiar, yet youthful sound that forces you to pay attention.
