8 Legendary Musicians Who Should Really Call It A Day

6. Metallica

No doubt I'll get lynched for this one, but hear me out before you light the torches and organise the angry mob. When you ask anyone who doesn't own a Metallica shirt or end every sentence with a James Hetfield "AAAH" what their favourite Metallica song is, you're almost certainly going to get an answer of "anything from Master Of Puppets, ...And Justice For All or Metallica (The Black Album)," all of which were released between the good years 1986 and 1991. Since then, the band have spent a great deal of time producing debatable movie soundtrack songs, fighting Napster and sticking their name on to anything that may boost the coffers. The jokes about Metallica selling out have been running riot since the early nineties, and they really do not do themselves any favours. I'm in no way questioning their ability to put on a great show, but more or less every song the band have produced in the last twenty years has fallen into one of three categories: 1) Every Metallica song ever 2) An awful cover version or 3) a confusing mess involving Lou Reed. Sorry to say, but I think it may finally be time for Metallica to give up on the whole making new albums things until something genuinely inspired comes along, and just stick to being one of the best live acts in the rock business. Okay, you can begin your angry chanting now.
