8 Legendary Musicians Who Should Really Call It A Day

2. Madonna

Madonna is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in pop music history, and certainly one of the most successful. At least in terms of female singers, she dominated the charts throughout the eighties, nineties and a lot the noughties. She is one who took the "try my hand at something new" route of reinvention, and did an admirable job of it at almost every turn. That was, however, until her 2009 album Hard Candy was released. Whilst she once again gave a good crack at the taste of her new, modern audience, her grip on the genre was simply not as strong as it had been before. She had gotten lazy: sampling other songs and relying on collaborations with major stars of the time (see Timbaland and Justin Timberlake as the guilty parties there). What's more, the public opinion of Madonna has seem to have shifted from respected icon to somewhat of an annoyance. Her flamboyant lifestyle mixed with her later releases sounding extremely similar have left people generally not caring about her anymore. The music world is finally getting too far ahead of Madonna, and though she may create a good impression of what was popular at the time of all her future releases, she will be relying more and more upon her name and stature in the business to sell her records. Plus, should she call it quits, we might never have to be horrified by the image of a woman older than our mothers cavorting around on stage in a leotard ever again.
