8 Music Artists You Wrongly Thought Were One-Hit Wonders

7. The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

It's perhaps understandable that The Proclaimers didn't have much of an international reach. The band's thick, Scottish accents and songs about their thick, Scottish accents almost guaranteed them regional success, but doomed them to be viewed as anything more than a novelty act oversees. Their only track to succeed all over the world, of course, was their most famous: I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles).

Almost immediately, the reaction is probably to turn your nose up and go "Oh, that one. The only song to beat out Tubthumping as Most Annoying in the World," but the single is undeniably a stomping bop when listened in isolation. Even more, the only reason it has this reputation of being an annoying, repetitive pop song is because that's how it's used in movies and TV, with shows like How I Met Your Mother leaning on this reputation for gags.

Regardless, it still became a hit in the USA, and still enjoys regular exposure today, but the follow-up tracks weren't quite as lucky. That's not to say The Proclaimers failed though, as outside of America the band scored a few other hit singles and enjoyed continued success.

Pretty much every release off their breakthrough hit Sunshine on Leith did well in the charts (though not as well as 500 Miles), while the follow-up album - which didn't drop for six years - hit number 8 on the UK charts. The following albums fell off a little, but the fact the band crafted eight more (and counting) means they must have done something right.

Hell, they were so successful there's even a movie based on Sunshine on Leith, and it's pretty damn good.
