5. The Cure
In the bright and glorious '80s, the goth phase of pop seems to far too overlooked in the grand scheme of things. Though plenty of acts from the post punk world like New Order were making waves around the same time, the allure of dark and brooding singers didn't really sink in until the Cure came along. While they may have been on the alternative side of the spectrum, it was virtually impossible to say no every time Robert Smith opened his mouth.
Throughout every single incarnation of this band, Smith has always been the one with the clear vision of where everything was headed, moving from the traditional post punk of their first few outings to having things turn a corner on songs like a Forest. Looking to expand his musical palette, most of the people who have come and gone in the Cure's lineup operate almost like different sonic colors for Smith to play with, whether it's the lofty grandeur of Just Like Heaven or the brooding backing track of Lullaby.
Above all else, you can really feel an earnestness in Smith's playing, as though he's as driven to write something as emotionally impactful as Friday I'm In Love all these years later. Though they may be considered a relic by some, the world of emo and modern pop still live in the shadow of The Cure.
