8 Rock Bands With Only One Member
4. Smashing Pumpkins
At the start of the alternative revolution, it wasn't all that cool to want to be a rock star anymore. Although we still had rock stars like Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain at the time, it was a definite taboo to play up yourself for the camera or even act like you wanted any of that attention. There was one exception though, and that was Billy Corgan.
Whereas bands like Pearl Jam thrived on the collaborative spirit, the only reason The Smashing Pumpkins exist in the form they are in today is because of Corgan, who's knack for writing pop melodies fit in perfectly with the rest of the band. Throughout every single version of the band, Corgan's adolescent whine has remained the one constant, even after the rapid decline that came after Adore happened in the late '90s.
Then again, it's not like Corgan is exactly the easiest to work with from a collaborative standpoint, as he was allegedly known to re-record other people's parts as far back as Siamese Dream. While giants like Jimmy Chamberlain and James Iha may have gone through the ranks, it's clear that nothing under the Smashing Pumpkins name is getting put out without Corgan's seal of approval first. It's a collaboration, yes...just not the most equal of input though.
