8 Uses Of Auto-Tune That Are Actually OK

5. Cat Power - 3,6,9

Cat Power is not the first name that pops into your head when you think about auto-tune. The enigmatic American singer's first few albums graced shelves back in the 90s, when the vocal effect was just a glint in T-Pain's eye. These records featured melancholy, sparse arrangements with Power's vulnerably imperfect voice prominent in the mix.

But the singer’s 2012 return album Sun changed her style considerably, borrowing heavily from R&B production techniques. Bright keyboards, drum machines and buoyant bass lines replaced the stark minor piano chords of her earlier work. The vocals on the album featured occasional bursts of auto-tune, particularly in the harmonies: the effect is a sunny, warm bed of vocal texture on which she her voice flutters melodically.
