8 Uses Of Auto-Tune That Are Actually OK
6. Frank Ocean - Provider
He may have an incredible voice (a tender baritone, occasionally soaring into an angelic falsetto) but Ocean has grown increasingly interested in warping, distorting and enhancing his voice digitally. His 2016 album Blond(e) clothed his voice in countless effects, giving the album a schizophrenic, polyglossic quality.
When he returned with a crop of surprise songs in late 2017, this vocal experimentalism continued to explore new territory. His use of auto-tune was especially noticeable on 2017 track “Provider”. Name-checking Stanley Kubrick, the song has a futuristic, but heartfelt, bent, like a robot with a soul. The auto-tune's wobbly texture also gives the song a psychedelic flavour, as if sung through a smokey, druggy haze.
