8 Uses Of Auto-Tune That Are Actually OK
3. Kanye West - Say You Will
West’s album 808’s and Heartbreak left a lot of fans disappointed with its morose self-pity, poppy R&B production and heavy autotune on every track. True, the technique was often used to disguise the faults in West’s less-than-perfect voice, but occasionally it provided just the right vocal texture to accentuate the album’s wounded loneliness.
This is best seen on opening track “Say You Will”, a seriously underrated track in Ye's discography. Aided by a beautifully sombre minor-key melody and portentous chords, the track details Kanye's nocturnal longing, punctuated by flashes of something darker: lyrics like "when I touch your neck, I see your soul" lurk ambiguously between tenderness and aggression. A stunning remix was released in 2016, featuring violinist Caroline Shaw.
