1. My Chemical Romance The Black Parade
When it comes to theatrical rock and roll, it's tough to look much further than mid-2000s My Chemical Romance. Despite clear theatrical tendencies in their earlier work, it wasn't until 2006's The Black Parade that this penchant for the larger-than-life truly became realized. Anyone who has seen the music video for lead single Welcome To The Black Parade will know exactly what I'm talking about. The video is bursting with atmosphere, from the costumes to the set design to the dozens and dozens of morbid extras. Not only that, but the video masterfully (and rather abstractly) teases out the albums narrative concept. The album focuses on a dying character known as The Patient, telling the story of his life, death and subsequent experiences in the afterlife. Given how both the videos for Welcome To The Black Parade and Famous Last Words attempt to visualise this story, there's already a great amount of aesthetic reference. Who wouldn't want a ghoulish continuation of the story on the big screen? With a decent budget the result could truly be fantastic. Which other great albums do you think would make great films?
