One of the most iconic albums in modern rock history, American Idiot has been described as a punk rock opera that follows the story of the Jesus of Suburbia, an adolescent anti-hero that is divided between constantly conflicting emotions, primarily rage and love. Throughout the album listeners follow the Jesus of Suburbia as he attempts to react to society, his peers and his subsequent isolation. Don't take my word for it, though. It's clear the narrative possibilities of American Idiot have been apparent from a long time now. For a start, the album has already been adapted into a stage musical, featuring all of the songs from the album and even some from 21st Century Breakdown, the band's follow-up. The musical expands the context of the record, introducing a specific group of suburban youths and focusing on the Jesus of Suburbia's experiences interacting with them. Even more notably, before the album's release the band's front man Billie Joe Armstrong discussed the possibility of the album becoming a feature film, with Tom Hanks even expressing interest in producing it. As of 2014, it's believed that it might still happen, as the playwright Rolin Jones was quoted as saying he was finishing up the script to hand into a Hollywood studio. Can we get an update on that, please?
