Album: Insomniac, released 1996 Creating a follow up to the now legendary Dookie was always going to be a colossal challenge, and some have criticised Insomniac for not progressing Green Days sound as much as it could have done, but theres no denying that Billie Joe and co brought a few personal flourishes to the albums tracks. Take 86 for example; a punk rock monster for many, but also a reflective look at the bands foundations for some. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCOfynekLvs Green Day were originally part of the 924 Gilman Street punk scene, an allegiance further ingrained by their early releases with the independent label Lookout! Records. Dookie, despite being a breakout success, was their first major label release with Reprise Records and the move was seen by many at 924 Gillman Street as selling out, despite leaving their old label on friendly terms. Green Day is now permanently banned from the club, and 86 depicts makes this sense of hostility all too clear. Interestingly, the song does not confirm if the hostilities are wrong or right- that is left to the listener to decide. What do you think?
