Even though the iconic heavy metal band's first studio album was received negatively by contemporary critics and is still commonly regarded as one of the group's weaker early efforts, it was undeniably influential and remains responsible for the popularisation of the heavy metal genre.

There's an abstract quality to the record that likely contributed to this negative response, and some of the songs occasionally come across as slightly improvised.
