3. Radiohead €“ Climbing Up The Walls

When listening to Climbing Up The Walls €“ one of the tracks from Radiohead's third studio album OK Computer €“ the overwhelming feeling that comes to mind is €œhopelessness€.

There are a bunch of reasons for this, including singer Thom Yorke's genuinely distraught vocals, which practically act as a black hole for the listener's joy. On top of that is the layered string section, which was composed by Jonny Greenwood and written for sixteen instruments. The piece was inspired by composer Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody To The Victims Of Hiroshima, which gives you a sense of the mood he was going for.

The song is eerie enough on its own, but a little context makes things even more unsettling. According to Yorke, the song was written about his experiences working at a hospital for the mentally unstable, as well as a New York Times article about serial killers.
